The robot has removed a brain tumor.

Canadian doctors from Calgary had a unique operation to remove a brain tumor. Its uniqueness, however, lies not in the success of the extraction of a malignant tumor the size of a chicken egg, but in the fact that doctors did not directly participate in it. The main work, under their strict guidance, was done by the robot surgeon NeuroArm.

For nine hours, which lasted this complex operation, NeuroArm, managed by surgeons, successfully coped with the task. The patient, a 21-year-old Canadian, successfully underwent surgery and is now undergoing intensive rehabilitation.

The robot has one very important advantage even over an experienced surgeon. It is an opportunity to hold the smallest tools. "The human hand is not capable of producing movements smaller than 2-3 millimeters, NeuroArm is able to take" steps "of just 50 micrometers," says NeuroArm project leader, neurosurgery professor Garrnett Sutherland.

According to Sutherland, "the operation performed represents a significant technical achievement in the use of robotics and remote control systems."
