Can we talk about the applicability of the law of Moore in the field of IaaS

Moore’s Law says that productivity increases by a factor of 2 every 2 years while maintaining the cost of devices. This hypothesis does not cease to generate various disputes.

Various experts and journalists convince the audience that the law may soon lose its relevance. On the other hand, there are all new areas in which they are trying to provoke him. It turns out that Moore's law is a fairly good beacon for performing various kinds of comparisons and analysis of the activities of competing companies.

Analysts of the publication Economist declare that the current level of technological development is borderline, and for further breakthrough capital investments are needed in new production facilities. The cost of refurbishing plants, even for the smallest modifications, is already estimated at billions of dollars, and all this cannot but affect the cost of the devices.

Of course, today's business does not evaluate the effectiveness of individual components in such detail. For companies it is important to understand the general feasibility of using certain solutions in the complex. This is an assessment at the data center level.

Other experts are trying to apply Moore's law to IaaS providers and their pricing. Here, AWS underwent direct research . As a result, it turned out that the decline in prices for the rental of virtual servers was not so significant as to obtain an explicit link to the model referred to in Moore’s law.

Anyway, it is necessary to understand that the very possibility of using IaaS gives business a competitive advantage, because the one-time cost of its own hardware is simply incomparable. Only the purchase of equipment will be a third of the budget, and its maintenance and energy consumption are those expenses that few people pay attention to. The cost of DIY solutions continues to grow while the rent of IaaS resources is getting cheaper.
