Book shelves and family data storage.

I wonder how, along with the disappearance of bookshelves and cabinets from the mandatory interior of city apartments, will the issue of convenient storage and access to family data archives be resolved?

After all, the time comes when almost every family member has a personal computer (not counting mobile devices). At the same time, many books, audio recordings purchased on the Internet, as well as some personal data (family photos, etc.) are not intended for uploading to the Internet, and are usually stored on computer hard drives of someone from the family. In “advanced” families, for this purpose, separate servers are used that are connected to the common apartment local area network.
However, such a solution is convenient for “advanced” users. For people whose PC knowledge level can be rated as “user”, server support is too complicated. OS installation, drivers, network settings, ftp / htp-server settings, etc. - not at all what the home user would like to do. A suitcase with signed CDs is, on the contrary, primitive, but not always convenient.
Therefore, I will try to fantasize on the topic “what device, and how could you effectively solve the task?” .
Perhaps the important parameters will be:
• universal data storage interface
• universal network interface
• convenient content management
• backing up information
• device autonomy
• energy efficiency
• small size
• noise level
• price
It seems to me a device smaller than macmini, using a low-power processor (~ 400 MHz, maybe xScale, down with coolers!), A built-in flash drive for ~ 80 Gb (down with noise!) Connected to the device bus via USB2, and live ), powered by an external power supply (down with the fans!).
The software uses some kind of open cross-platform add-on over the OS, with a thoughtful (tailored) interface.

The device has built-in Wi-Fi, which allows you to cling to it from a mobile device or via an apartment Wi-Fi access point, for example, via an ADSL router with Wi-Fi.
Result: there is a silent, cost-effective device that can access information from any home computer. The device has preset parameters of the database structure, and even the usual “user” with the instruction will be able to get it out of the box, and after half an hour start using it.
(device administration, remote access to it from the Internet, security, backup, etc. - in this case I do not consider it as optional, that is, minor :)
')
- Yes, I understand that this is only "fantasies on the subject." And maybe in the future it will be more convenient to store all data on remote Google-storage drives. Or maybe the position “I keep everything near” will be more attractive ... Who knows?
