What do 2D games look like from the side?

Probably, everyone played on consoles in 2D games, when you look from the side and move only in all directions, but in the same plane (brothers Mario, Tom and Jerry, etc.) So I wondered how they look from the side.
Does anyone have any ideas on this? :-)
