Criminal escaped from prison by typosquatting

Recently in the UK, Neil Moore was convicted - a fraudster who successfully engaged in social engineering. He called many organizations, posing as an employee of the bank, and under various pretexts convinced them to transfer money to his account. Thus, he earned more than 1.8 million pounds.

Soon after he was taken into custody, he managed to circle his finger and the prison staff, and in a very unexpected way .

Using a mobile phone, secretly carried to the cell by other inmates, he registered the domain hmcts-gsi-gov.org.uk - typosquatting from hmcts.gsi.gov.uk - one of the domains used by law enforcement agencies in the UK. The domain was registered in the name of the investigator who considered his case, and the Royal Court of Justice was indicated as the address of the domain owner.

Then Neal Moore from this domain sent a fake letter to the prison address with instructions to release him to freedom. Prison staff did not suspect anything and released the fraudster. The deception went unnoticed for three whole days before the fraudster was again in the hands of the police.

Now Moore faces an increase in time for escaping from prison. Note that the inventiveness of Neil Moore in fraud, when he urged large firms to transfer money to him, was noted even in the court records.
