LCD panels will enter the “blue phase” in 2011

Samsung has announced the completion of work on the LCD panel of the new model, called the Blue Phase LCD. The main difference between new and standard LCD displays is the support of a frame scan of 240 Hz, thereby providing a much more natural display of moving objects. Samsung plans to show a prototype on May 18 at the SID (Society for Information Display) 2008 in Los Angeles.

Another important advantage of the Blue Phase LCD is the lack of special layers that align the crystals. That, in turn, leads to a significant reduction in the cost of production. Unlike other types of panels (Twisted Nematic, In-Plane Switching and Vertical Alignment), in which the presence of leveling layers is a necessity, the layers of Blue Phase LCD crystals are formed independently, which reduces the production cycle and, accordingly, the cost of the product.

Samsung is planning to start mass production of new-style panels in 2011.
