$ 700 per megabyte - the cost of SMS traffic

It is no secret that mobile operators in almost all countries set an unrealistically high cost of SMS, which is usually tens and hundreds of times higher than the cost. It is strange that sometimes it is cheaper to call by voice than to send a few characters via SMS.

Such a strange tariff policy is inherent not only to Russian operators, but also to their foreign colleagues. The English astrophysicist, Dr. Nigel Bannister made the calculations and found out that sending SMS between two cellular subscribers on Earth costs four times more than sending data from the Hubble orbital telescope.

Dr. Bannister used the average cost of a message of 5 cents and a maximum size of 140 characters in his calculations. It turns out that for the transfer of 1 MB of traffic via SMS, operators charge about $ 700 from users. At the same time, the cost of traffic from the most expensive telescope in the history of mankind is no more than £ 85 per megabyte.
