The Groovy project intends to join the Apache Software Foundation

This is a translation of this publication from the blog of Guillaume La Forge, the official manager of the Groovy project.

The Groovy team is pleased to announce its intention to join the Apache Software Foundation (ASF) .

Following the recent announcement by Pivotal of the end of funding for the permanent developers of the Groovy project, the team decided that it would be advisable to demonstrate to the Groovy community that the project will not disappear in the long run. Groovy will develop regardless of the availability of funding by private organizations and sponsors, as well as regardless of any changes in the development team.

We talked several times (both online and offline) with representatives of various software funds, in particular, with the Eclipse Foundation , Software Freedom Conservancy and ASF .
')
We were very grateful for the advice received from our users, the developers of these funds, the participants of various forums, etc. These discussions were very fruitful and useful. Of course, all these funds are very interesting and are excellent for the project, although, of course, they all have their pros and cons. But overall, the Apache Software Foundation is exactly the foundation that we think is best suited, given our limitations and our philosophy.

We will soon begin the application process for accepting a project in an incubator ( in which the project will be integrated with the software development and licensing scheme adopted by ASF, note. ). If the application is accepted, then in the process of incubating the project we will encounter some “gray zones” that were identified during the discussion stage. But we will be very happy to work together with our mentors to ensure that Groovy still remains one of the largest open source software projects in the JVM ecosystem.
