Crowdsourcing in Astronomy: Classification of Galaxies

Every day, astronomical observatories generate terabytes of information with which there is no time to understand. The Galaxy Zoo project invites everyone to participate in the visual classification of images of galaxies obtained in the framework of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey project.

In general, the idea is simple - you need to take the picture to one of the classes of the Hubble sequence :

As it turned out, casual users cope with the classification no worse than professionals, so that with the efforts of ~ 100,000 project participants managed to get scientifically significant results.
