Sync music in Ubuntu with iPhone over WiFi

Sync music will be with Amarok.

1. Preparing iPhone / iTouch:

- if you still do not have BSD Subsystem and SSH on your phone, then install them from the Installer;

- set Settings-> General-> Auto-Lock to “Never”;

- connect iPhone to the same access point to which your computer is connected;

- go to Settings-> WiFi-> connection name-> blue arrow and look at the IP-address of your iPhone and click on “Static”. Now your iPhone / iTouch will have a permanent IP.

2. Preparing Ubuntu:

- if you use Ubuntu Hardy Heron (8.04), then you only need to install ipod-convenience from Synaptic or using a terminal. And make sure that libgpod3 defaults on you. Go to step 3;

- if you use Gutsy (7.10), then you need to add ppa.launchpad.net/ipod-touch/ubuntu gutsy repository to Synaptic and install ipod-convenience from it;

- during installation ipod-convenience, enter the IP of your iPhone / iTouch and specify the mount point;

- connect your iPhone / iTouch using a USB cable to your computer (do not worry, this is a one-time procedure required for SSH initialization);

- enter the following command in the terminal:

iphone-mount - if you have an iPhone

or

ipod-touch-mount - if you have an iPod Touch;

- wait until a window appears asking for the password for “root”;

- enter the password “dottie” or “alpine” depending on your firmware;

- enter in the terminal:

iphone-umount or ipod-touch-umount

')

3. Sync with Amarok:

- go to Settings-> Configure Amarok;

- click “Add Device” in the menu “Media Devices” and select the plug-in “Apple iPod Device”;

- enter the mount point and the name of your iPhone / iTouch;

- go back to “Media Devices” and click on the “Configure” of your plugin.

- enter the commands for mounting / dismounting the device (for example: iphone-mount / iphone-unmount) and press OK;

- return to the main program window and click Devices-> iPod and select the model of your device;

- click “Connect”;

- enter twice the password for “root”;

- everything! Now you can send music from your computer to the device via WiFi.

PS: in principle, with a little desire, this instruction can be applied not only to Amarok, but also to Rhythmbox, Exaile, Songbird.
