When a popular company has a new website, you may have two reactions: from praises like "It is adaptive!" And "It is wonderful!" As is customary on the Internet, our opinion forks and becomes unconditional.
The first reaction to the new site
Majora's Mask 3DS was just that.

')
The site is very big. On a full screen with a resolution of 1920 × 1080, I downloaded only 2.5 MB of images. All together weighs more than 3MB, not counting the video that started to load (60MB until I stopped it).
I will not argue that the site Majora's Mask is good for the user, because I have not looked under the hood. I just want to draw attention to the fact that it is possible and quite acceptable to create websites weighing more than 1Mb. Although it is still believed that after this cherished number, the site is waiting for failure.
You can always find scientific studies that show how deadly a long download is for your site. It's no secret that users do not like to wait.
But the thing is: these common data just mislead us. Not all sites are created on an equal footing. In this case, users will not go somewhere else: for new and old customers who are interested in Nintendo / Zelda, there is no alternative and often they do not go to them.
Could this be an excuse? Often, I tolerate bad and uncomfortable sites that have no alternatives (I recall state sites).
But nevertheless, I do not agree that from the very beginning of development the size is bad.
It is difficult to bring the visual component of the same Majora's Mask without a lot of content. How to help the user to remember his childhood, how can his imagination be played with a dull flat design?
A long download is worth it.
For the same reason, Apple wins with its pages of several megabytes. Buyers stand in lines for hours when they can go to the next door and buy a Windows Phone device there.
But such sites are few and hard to find. However, they will only benefit if lightweight versions are detected when a slow connection is detected, making the information available. And when there is high speed, it would be foolish not to use it.
In any case, if you download important content and styles first, late loading important material so that the user gets access to the main functionality of the site, then the number of megabytes loaded is not the best indicator. Enough blindly judge it about the quality of development!
I want to say again: statistics can be misleading and mistaken, just like the general use of browsers around the world means nothing to one specific site.
