It is finished! What so much talked about inside Yahoo! (and about that - to my personal regret - knew so few people
outside the company) finally happened - the
Internet Location Platform became a public service, as part of Yahoo! Developer Network
Excerpt from the site:
The Yahoo! Internet Location Platform Our goal is to provide the Yahoo! The Geographic Developer Community has a permanent, permanent, and language-neutral manner.
Briefly tell what it is. The key concept of ILP is WOEID (read:
voi-ai-di ) - WhereOnEarth IDentifier is a unique identifier for any place on earth (almost literal translation), a 32-bit number. The identifier can have (and have) countries, cities, streets, as well as all that can be combined under the concept of POI - place of interest. For example, WOEID London, where this service was developed -
44418 .
The search can be carried out in a variety of variations - only by name, by name indicating County / State / Country in any combinations; if there are several options, then the “most popular” is chosen - without going into details, the criterion of popularity is the number of mentions of this place on the Internet.
At the moment, this product is used in Yahoo! (excluding, however, Yahoo! Maps - for various reasons, but that will change soon). The database contains more than 6 million entities - that is, coverage in America and Europe is almost 100% (in Russia, of course, less - but again, the situation is improving and will be greatly improved later).

Using the service is easy - just get the standard Application ID (as for all YDN services) - and go! Data can be received in XML and JSON format - which will be especially convenient for all sorts of AJAX-mashaps.
If someone is interested in details about the service and in general about the platform - ask, I do not promise that I will answer all the questions, but I will try at least ;-)
