AMD announced plans to release 6-core and 12-core Opteron family processors
AMD has announced its plans to release 6-core and 12-core Opteron family processors, thus expanding its product line and overshadowing its own plans for producing 8-core processors.

The 12 nuclear processors, codenamed Magny-Cours, will be designed for server platforms and will be released in the first half of 2010, judging by the company's statements. These processors will contain 12MB third-level cache and support DDR3 memory. This processor will include two 6-core processors in one circuit, which, according to statements from Mercury Research analyst Dean McCheron, will be easier and cheaper.

The release of the 6th nuclear processor under the code name - Istanbul, is scheduled for the second half of 2009, right before the release of the 12th nuclear one.

Also, AMD plans to release a 6-core Sao Paolo processor in 2010, which will have a 6MB third-level memory cache and support DDR3.

Until recently, AMD announced its plans to release 8-core processors, codenamed Barcelona, in 2009. The Montreal processor was replaced by the Istanbul processor, and the line continued with the 12-core model.

New processors will consume less energy, due to the fact that they will be produced on 45nm technology, while the current Barcelona processors are produced on technology - 65nm.

This change in events allows AMD to bypass its main rival, Intel, which is going to launch 6 Xeon core processors in the second half of this year, and switch to 8 core models. True, they are unlikely to win the market from Intel, because According to the results for the first half of 2008, Intel occupied almost 80%, namely, 78.5% of the market, although AMD's share rose from 18.7% in early 2007 to 20.6% in early 2008.
