The idea of Transport appeared more than three years ago, and we launched it in March 2014. Before, crawling tags of buses were included in our Mobile Maps as a separate layer and were available in six regions - Kazan, Omsk, Nizhny Novgorod, Perm, the Moscow region and Novosibirsk. Our Maps of that time, due to the huge popularity of traffic jams, were more important for motorists, so the layer of moving vehicles in the settings included about a thousand people per month.

It was possible to explain such a small audience in two ways: either users do not need pedestrian functionality, or they need it, but it is very difficult to find it in the interface. To find the answer to this question, we conducted a huge study of people's behavior. It turned out that, firstly, among Internet users in Russia there are more than half pedestrians, and secondly, a third of pedestrians asked what kind of service they lack to get around the city, said that they really want to be able to see where the right bus for them is going now. So much said that the reason for such a small audience is in the interface.

So we still decided to make an application for pedestrians who use public transport. After exiting the beta in November 2014, Yandex.Transport was able to show the intervals of movement and the forecast of arrival at the stop, lists of stops along the route and route geometry on the map for 10 Russian cities, among which Moscow was not.

At the same time, we received Moscow data and debugged their transmission for a long time so that it was stable, tested the quality, checked to see if we could withstand such an increase in load on our side. According to Russian law, all public transport is equipped with GPS / GLONASS sensors. The sensor from the satellite receives information about the time and coordinates of the vehicle, which are then transmitted by the GPRS modem to the carrier’s server. Here there are first losses in the quality of signals: for example, the sensors stop working when the bus enters the tunnel, and modems - when there is no cellular connection. The data should contain the route number, mode of transport, coordinates, time and vehicle-specific identifier - so we can process and show them in the application. The format that Yandex needs is acquired when the partner sets up the transfer in a certain way. In addition to buses, trolley buses and trams, Yandex.Transport allows you to follow the minibuses of the Autoline company, as well as the Mostransavto buses in Moscow region.

The Yandex.Transport application is available on the App Store and Google Play for Astana, Voronezh, Yekaterinburg, Kazan, Kaliningrad, Krasnoyarsk, Lipetsk, Moscow and the Moscow Region, Nizhny Novgorod, Novosibirsk, Omsk, Perm, St. Petersburg, Chelyabinsk and Cherepovets. Even in thirty cities Yandex.Transport works in the mode of the directory on stops and routes.
