IBM introduced the new z13 mainframe

IBM introduced a new family of mainframe class servers, the IBM z Systems family, the first of which was the IBM z13 server.

z13 is one of the most powerful servers of this type, while z13 is distinguished not only by high performance, but also by the ability to encrypt and analyze transactions in real time. It took five years and about a billion US dollars to build this mainframe. In the process of working on the creation of z13, innovative technologies of more than 500 new patents were used.

The results were quite impressive. For example, the system can process about 2.5 billion transactions per day, and the technologies used in the z13 can detect fraud cases in real time for 100% of business transactions, instantly providing the user with analytical data to evaluate the operation.

Now an increasing number of operations are performed from mobile devices. And any such operation uses data about past purchases, initiates the procedure of encryption and decryption of information, verification of the user's form and other processes. According to experts, the elementary user operation involves, on average, about 100 different system interactions. And each such interaction can be used by fraudsters. IBM MobileFirst z13 technology helps solve this problem.

The advantage of the z13 mainframe is not only the ability to detect fraudulent transactions, but also a productive processor. The developers claim that this is the fastest microprocessor, which bypasses all existing solutions, surpassing them by about half. At the same time for carrying out mobile transactions using the vector type of calculations. With regard to the advantages in terms of memory, the estimate goes to 300%, the throughput is 100% higher than other solutions. The processor has 8 cores, the manufacturing technology is 22 nm. The clock frequency of work is 5 GHz. The z13's maximum configuration includes 141 processors and 10 TB of RAM.

When using a mainframe, you can run up to 8000 virtual servers, which is about 50 servers per processor. A preliminary assessment of the performance of a single processor on "traditional" mainframe applications is 1695 MIPS (millions of operations per second). Maximum performance for 141 processors - more than 111,000 MIPS. Not so long ago, IBM conducted a survey among directors and managers of IT departments of enterprises. The topic of the survey is the priority of various factors for the field of mobile technologies. 71% of respondents noted that security is the most important factor in this area. And now, new IBM technologies provide embedded real-time encryption and analytics.

According to Mike Gilfix ((Mike Gilfix), director of corporate mobile solutions at IBM, the z13 mainframe allows companies to process a huge number of customer requests, and ensure fast order processing. The z13 capabilities allow companies to increase the level of personalization of their services - in real time the system evaluates behavioral factors and provides information on customer behavior patterns (habits).

“Today, business has no opportunity to analyze 100% of consumer transactions. Thanks to the z13 system, enterprises will be able to use IBM's technologies for intellectual and analytical modeling, programs for statistical data processing, and quickly personalize operations at the time of their execution, ”said the press service of IBM.

It is worth noting that the mainframe is an open platform, with support for Linux and OpenStack. The corporation has also released a new OS release - z / OS, in which a new type of analytics is used, there is support for Hadoop and support for data storage systems. IBM is currently the largest mainframe manufacturer in the world.
