LinkMeUp. Issue number 23. Compass-EOS - the first router with optical switching within the board

In the 22nd release of the podcast we talked about the hardware base of modern routers and switches - ASIC and FPGA, data transfer within the board, its processing, programming FPGA.
At that time, we did not touch the switching factories, which provide both data transfer between the line cards and the network processors of the same card. There are situations in our lives when switching factories become a bottleneck and the concept of Back Pressure appears.
In the 23rd issue, Alexander Clipper talks about the Compass-EOS router, which completely abandoned the switching factories in favor of the so-called D-Chip, an exclusive development by Compass-EOS. Now all the chips and boards can communicate with each other directly. This becomes possible because the chips interact in an optical medium, the performance of which is significantly higher than that of a copper conductor.
But better than a vendor engineer, I will not tell you about it.
