Micro-conference UX-Wednesday №21 in the framework of User Experience Russia 2014

On October 23, the 21st UX-Wednesday Micro-Conference was held at the Mail.Ru Group office at the User Experience Russia 2014 conference. During the day, specialists in design and design of interfaces from different departments of the company, as well as invited guests made a series of presentations about their work experience and participated in its discussion. This time we had Anton Guglya (LinguaLeo), Dmitry Scheglov (Sberbank), Yaroslav Shuvaev (BShShD), Anna Mikhina and David Isakhanyan (Bank Tinkoff), Ksenia Sternina (Mail.Ru Group), Pavel Skripkin (Mail.Ru Group ), Julia Markhadayeva (Nimax) and my story.

Micro-conference UX-Wednesday №21 in the framework of User Experience Russia 2014

Yuri Vetrov (Mail.Ru Group)

I opened the section with a story about the development of the Mail.Ru Group framework for the unification of design. Last year we launched a mobile web on its base , this time we went further and used a more complicated task - we transfer large content projects to the design and technical platform. Such a platform solves several tasks at once:
  1. Guaranteed design unification. The product development and update method uses a single code base, which stores once created and tested interface patterns.
  2. Scaling improvements. Having finished the pattern in one of the projects (for example, by increasing the depth of viewing in the news block on the topic), you can quickly distribute it to the others and increase the product efficiency of the entire service line.
  3. Constant relevance of design. Avoiding heroic products every few years to regular hygiene. The restarts take a lot of energy and lose thousands of small developments bolted to the product over a long time of its development.
  4. Less routine for the designer, more focus on food tasks. Finally, there is a time to think about something besides the endless support of a sufficient state of design.

')
The platform was launched quite recently and there is still a very long list of improvements and bugs. But the most difficult thing is over and the results are impressive - this year we made more for updating content projects than for the two previous ones. The presentation describes in detail what path we have traveled and what we learned from its course. The video, unfortunately, was not recorded.

Anton Gugla (LinguaLeo)

Anton Guglya from LinguaLeo talked about how the design processes in the company line up. This is a very mature and systematic approach that allows not only effectively solving problems, but also developing the design strategically. We are following a similar path, but I envy Anton a little that in a single product company it is easier to focus and go faster on all fronts.

Dmitry Scheglov (Sberbank)

Dmitry Shcheglov, Head of Product and Services Design in Sberbank, spoke about the development of the mobile direction. More than 2.5 million people use their mobile bank, and despite stories about the characteristics of the audience, the team is not afraid to develop it in modern directions. Dmitry spoke about the approaches to working on products that allow releasing updates frequently and keeping the rating in the AppStore at an excellent level.

Yaroslav Shuvaev (BVShD)

Yaroslav Shuvaev oversees intensives on UX / UI in the British , which are one of the best ways to professionally upgrade. He spoke about the program, its history and plans. I participated in two intensives and I really liked the level of the audience - practitioners who have at least an average level of qualification come in, which allows us to talk about quite complex topics without digging into the basics. The next course will take place from January 12 to January 20.

Single page presentation .

David Isakhanyan (TCS Bank)Anna Mikhina (TCS Bank)

Another story about the banks was the presentation of David Isakhanyan and Anna Mikhina from Tinkoff Bank . They described the features of the work on the company's business applications. Their peculiarity is that the user is issued a corporate smartphone, the platform of which may differ from that used on a personal device. This greatly limits the interface solutions - the iPhone owner may not know the features of Android. The bank also uses an advanced UI Kit that allows you to build applications from ready-made pieces of code with a design stretched over it.

Ksenia Sternina

My colleague Ksenia Sternina walked through the research of searching through pictures. In the course of the experiment, different approaches were compared, and competitor solutions were checked. Ksenia spoke about the main patterns of behavior and user expectations. One of the most interesting is that users want to maximize the use of page space when the number of columns increases on wide monitors, despite the fact that this mode worsens the findability.

Pavel Skripkin (Mail.Ru Group)

Pavel Skripkin from our design team described the design features and the launch of the updated portal menu , which appeared on Mail.Ru Group products this summer. At first glance, the task seems simple, but it requires to take into account the real needs of nearly four dozen services, each with its own tasks, its own management and its own team. In addition, you need a technological solution that allows you to easily and centrally distribute and update the menu on all projects. In general, the task required a lot of time and effort, but allowed to systematize the general-port solutions.

Yulia Markhadayeva (Nimax)

Yulia Markhadaeva from Nimax closed the series of speeches with a very detailed guideline on drawing up guidelines. Previously, she released a series of articles (http://www.cmsmagazine.ru/library/items/graphical_design/guideline-for-web-projects/) on this topic and in her presentation described all these aspects. The main sections of the guideline, features of application for different types of projects, experience in working with clients. It turned out very capacious basic reference.

Max Tenth (RedMadRobot)

We finished a bit earlier, therefore, together with Max Tenths from RedMadRobot, we had a small question and answer session, during which he also shared his experience of writing guidelines.

The event is open - we invite not only speakers, but also listeners from other companies. If you want to speak with us - write to me at y.vetrov@corp.mail.ru and we will choose an interesting topic of the story and a convenient date for it. You can find out the schedule and program of future events, as well as sign up for them on the micro-conference Facebook page .
