Mikrotik - Open and check cooling

Hello. Happiness

After reading the article “Mikrotik - Pros and Cons” and not finding in it any mention of “surprises” with cooling radiators in new, not quite cheap models, and also not being able to add a comment (not expensive yet), I decided to publish it as a separate article in sandbox For this problem, in my case, could lead to the complete inoperability of routers right out of the box, which is unpleasant, at least.

Being a glandular to the bone, I have a habit of looking in (before switching on) into any newly acquired device. As for the general development, and in order to control the quality of the assembly, which, alas, even eminent manufacturers have not been shining lately.

Not escaped this fate and three devices of Mikrotik company. One, dear, big and strong “Mikrotik Cloud Core Router CCR1036-12G-4S”, and two, essentially managed “Cloud Router Switch CRS109-8G-1S-2HnD-IN” switches.

My surprise was boundless, and the joy of forethought overwhelmed me when there seemed to be almost one hundred percent fatal "surprise" of the assembly in what seemed to be wonderful in all respects, namely, the cooling radiators of small chips, which had fallen off, apparently. They just lay on the elements of the board! It is terrible to imagine what would have happened, give me food without prior opening.

I had to experience even more surprise at a detailed study of the method by which these radiators were attached to the chips. Before falling off, they were glued with a transparent, paper-thin material, suspiciously similar to double-sided stationery tape. This fact, I confess, I was somewhat puzzled, because the quality of the soldering of the elements and the layout of the board during a cursory study seemed to me to be of sufficient quality. How could they prevent such a “bug” with radiators? I don’t understand.

Not long after thinking, he took off the factory “scotch” and replaced it with heat-conducting glue of a famous Russian manufacturer. I am sure that if not forever, then for a long time I removed the problem of falling off or slipping of radiators from the chips.

Two months have passed since the situation described. Routers work with a decent load without failures. Temperature stable.

I really hope that the information presented in the article will be useful for specialists operating Mikrotik products, and at least save them from wasting travel time to suppliers in order to replace those that failed, as a result of slipping or falling off the radiators of the specified manufacturer’s routers.

After all, money can be earned, nerves are restored, and even health can already be bought. And time is the only irreplaceable resource. Take care of him.
