* by people, in the context of this topic, I mean all representatives of homo sapiens, excluding geeks - quasi ** - cyborgs :)
** quasi (from Lat. quasi - something like, as if, as it were) // Great Soviet EncyclopediaFrom time to time I see the appearance of topics about captcha, bots and, in particular, the fight against the latter.
Indeed, at this stage of the development of the Internet, these topics are undoubtedly a sore spot for many projects ... large projects.
')
However, in the course of ascertaining the advantages / disadvantages of the next “revolutionary” captcha, for some reason, the users, the very mere mortals, for whom the sites are made, are bypassed.
(sites / social networks / blogs / etc. IT subjects for people "in the subject" do not take into account)
If I see a captcha on an obscure site, and coupled with confirmation of registration by email, I conclude that the developers were a bit lazy, shifting the burden of fighting bots to ordinary mortals. And none of them, by the way, did not, of course, bear such honorable duties on themselves, did not beg, kneeling :) especially housewives, the hang-up threshold for which is extremely low.
And believe me, they are not interested in how much spam comes to you every day, how many servers you have, what load on these and other intimate details. They are only interested in solving their problems and they are ready to pay money for it both directly and indirectly (viewing advertising). And the faster, more convenient, easier they succeed, the greater the chance that they will come to visit you again.
Captcha, exactly as the registration confirmation is evil, however ...
If on large, highly attended projects to make concessions in the fight against bots / spam (read a great evil :) for the sake of human-friendly interface & interaction is not possible for technical reasons, then in small / medium projects such an approach is possible. Completely get rid of bots / spam will not work, but to reduce these figures to a minimum - completely.
"Choose the lesser of two evils."
I read somewhere on the Internet:
Web services should be useful as actimel, intuitive as female breasts,
simple as an ax and fast as a spherical horse light in a vacuum.
Do not put the burden of the fight against bots / spam on the shoulders of mere mortals, if such an opportunity exists objectively. And they will praise you, they will love the honorary bookmark in your favorites, they will tell about you to their relatives, friends, children, and the children, in turn, to their children.
Amen.
