Created a program for overclocking the intellect

Scientists for the first time in the world were able to experimentally prove the possibility of the development of mobile intelligence in humans. They created a computer program that stimulates the working memory in such a way that the brain's ability to learn and solve unknown problems really improves. Although the market for such programs is estimated at a quarter of a billion dollars (and legal chemical doping for the brain will only appear on the market in a few years), scientists still do not intend to commercialize their sensational development.

Fluid intelligence is the ability to perceive and memorize new things, to solve new problems that people have never encountered before. Unlike the so-called “accumulated” intelligence, which is based on acquired knowledge (mathematics, vocabulary, etc.), mobile intelligence is determined from the birth of a person and remains unchanged throughout life. Some experts sometimes compare a bunch of mobile and accumulated intelligence with a bunch of computer hardware and software. The first is laid by nature, and the second is amenable to upgrade. With age, the first one wears out, and the second practically does not deteriorate and may even develop, turning into wisdom.

Now it turns out that the “iron” in the human brain can be slightly “overclocked”. A 25-minute daily workout is enough for this, after which thinking becomes more agile.

In their experiment, a group of scientists used to train a sophisticated audio / video version of the standard test for short-term memory, in which a person must respond to the appearance of repeated patterns in the information flow (n-back test). For example, in the case of sound stimulation, a sequence of letters is called a person: A-S-D-P-S ... and he must react to the repeated "C".

So, after stimulating the working memory of this method, people showed significantly better results in working memory IQ tests than those who did not undergo such stimulation.

This is, without understatement, a sensational achievement. In no case should he be confused with banal training on IQ tests, since training in some tests does not improve the results in other tests. Here the situation is completely different. Training working memory gives an improvement in tests for intelligence.

In this experiment, the German test Bochumer Matrizen (this is a sophisticated version of the Raven progressive matrices) was used for verification. Untrained people correctly answered an average of 10 questions from this test, but after 19 days of stimulating working memory for 25 minutes a day, the result was already 14.7 questions.

The results of this scientific work were published yesterday in the journal “Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences”.
