Amazon will compete for the creation of a "green Internet"

Recently, global IT giants are increasingly moving their data centers to regenerative forms of energy. In its annual report on the state of the data center industry in terms of its impact on the environment, the international independent non-governmental environmental organization Greenpeace published the ranking of the most "green" Internet companies: Apple, Google, Facebook. They “feed” their data centers using renewable energy sources.

Amazon, the largest cloud service provider, followed the lead of its competitors and pledged to transfer its computing power to 100% renewable energy. According to the statement , on its website, Amazon has assumed “long-term commitments” to use only renewable energy in its global infrastructure. True speech about the temporary space, when this obligation takes effect was not.

Earlier, Greenpeace IT analyst Gary Cook said that Amazon prioritized achieving efficiency, rather than moving towards a complete transfer of its data center from “dirty” electricity to environmentally friendly electricity. In the past, customers did not respond to the "dirty" data centers of the cloud giant, content with low prices. Times are changing, and price competition has emerged in the cloud services market. The company's clients rained questions about the environmental implications of cloud services.

Amazon's Greening Clouds

"Amazon's data center consumes a tremendous amount of electricity, and they grow incredibly fast, so such statements on the part of the company can surely be called promising," Greenpeace reports. But the "green" is not yet fully satisfied with this commitment. The organization was in a long “war” with Amazon, blaming the latter for the lack of transparency in the IT giant's policy. At the same time, Amazon itself has criticized the attempts of its competitors in the use of renewable energy sources.

“The company will have to give more detailed information to its customers in order to gain our trust and prove that the commitment to switch to environmentally friendly energy sources for their data centers is not just empty words,” Greenpeace said they must provide a detailed plan for the implementation and achievement of their ambitious goals and commitments. "

The company already has three carbon neutral regions, two of which are in the United States. In the autumn of this year, Amazon announced the launch of a second data center to support the AWS cloud platform in Europe. New server farm located in Frankfurt (Germany). The main feature of the new facility is that it should become the first carbon-neutral Amazon data center outside the US.
