We have created a startup, not quite at the ready stage yet, but already at the level when it is time to think about security. We naturally have several major competitors (they are settling in America), but this is not about them, but how they can harm us.
The first (which is what interests you now) for which it is possible to cling, they can register our name as a trademark and then ask, so to speak. We are beginners, of course, the money is "very limited" compared to them. The question is whether to register the brand itself, and in what country or is it possible to do without this hemorrhoids? Guys of some significant internationally rendered services for some reason do not always bother about this ...

Having a trademark in Austria costs 500 ?, for the European Union 1000 ?, for the whole world - absolutely unreal. To register in Austria, they can do it in the US, what does it threaten us with, and then in Austria it is not necessary, it turns out? Or to do both in Austria and in the USA? It is a little monetary, but how reliable?
