Yahoo transfers voice traffic from its IM pager to
Jajah , which specializes in VoIP telephony. Now all calls from
Yahoo Messenger will be made through the Jajah network, which has more than 200 points of presence in all regions of the world, as well as billing and user support. In theory, users should not notice the difference, although Jajah software uses a proprietary codec. Financial terms of the
transaction were not disclosed.
For Jajah, this is a very important transaction that can greatly strengthen its position in the market. In general, it is one of the fastest growing VoIP services in the world. The subscriber base has been growing exponentially since the Austrian startup was founded in 2005 (now the head office has already moved from Austria to California) and has now exceeded 10 million accounts.
Yahoo Messenger has 97 million registered users. It is not known how many of them at least once launched the voice communication function. A call service between two PCs is free, a call to a landline in the USA costs 1 cent per minute, and it is more expensive to call other countries. For $ 2.49 per month, you can buy a phone number that is indistinguishable from the usual one and receive calls to your computer, just like a regular phone.
