After
not downloading ubuntu-8.04-alternate-i386.iso , I was faced with the question of updating my current version 7.10 (with all the latest updates) to 8.04. Actually, the essence of the problem is that I do not have a writing CD / DVD and the ancient computer can not boot from USB-HDD.
First, I decided to update via the Internet, since this opportunity is already available, but the prospect of downloading another 700 MB for about 2 days via GPRS did not please me. Also, I was not satisfied with the prospect of waiting for the moment when I could get to the writing drive. So I started looking. And I found a rather trivial solution to my problem.
So, in order to upgrade from the ubuntu-8.04-alternate-i386.iso file I downloaded, I did this:
')
- Mounted ubuntu-8.04-alternate-i386.iso as follows:
sudo mount -t iso9660 ubuntu-8.04-alternate-i386.iso / cdrom -o loop
- Added a disk to the list of repositories:
sudo apt-cdrom add
After that, he opened the second tab, once again mounted the ISO image, and on the first tab, pressed ENTER, after which the disk was successfully added to the list of application sources. - Now, to start the upgrade, you need to run the cdromupgrade script:
sudo / cdrom / cdromupgrade
The result is a dialog box for upgrading your Ubuntu 7.10 to 8.04 LTS.
After these “manipulations”, for updating you will need to download about 50 MB from the Internet instead of 650 MB. Now I sit and update and enjoy.
PS: I warn you - with Ubuntu I'm about 4 months, so the above letter is not a panacea, although it works for, I repeat, Ubuntu version 7.10 (with all the latest updates) paired with ubuntu-8.04-alternate-i386.iso (Other variations did not check, for obvious reasons).
PSS: If the topic is good, then I will supplement it with your commentaries, experience and knowledge, so that people like me can live easier.
