Yandex.Browser is now for Linux

They say that they are waiting for the promised three years, but we managed more quickly, and just at YaC 2014 , the first beta version of Yandex Browser for Linux was presented.

In this post, in addition to the link, there is a small story about the difficulty of supporting Flash Player, what percentage of Yandex employees use Linux and why the comments on Habré about it are especially important to us.

This assembly could be called a special version for Habrahabr - we were not asked anywhere to release it as actively as here. Under any of our articles about Yandex. The browser was surely something like this:

On the other hand, in Yandex itself, about 15% of employees use certain Linux distributions on desktops. Several hundred people from among them voluntarily help us test the browser's preliminary builds. Therefore, the demand for the browser was also internal.

The current build for Linux is almost the same Yandex Browser as on Windows or OS X. In our address bar, you can still enter the names and addresses of sites in the wrong layout ( for more information ). Available mouse gestures and a quick transition to the top of the page by clicking on the tab. Turbo mode compresses not only pages, but also video while viewing it. Supports installation of extensions not only from the built-in directory and the Chrome Web Store, but also from Opera Addons (yes, we supported the NEX format). And much more.

However, the Linux version still has differences from other builds. For example, the current beta of Yandex. Browser comes without a pre-installed Flash Player plugin. And there are several reasons for this. First of all, it is worth remembering about the refusal of Adobe from the development of Flash for this platform. This is only for the NPAPI version of the plugin, since the PPAPI version of Flash Player is still being developed, but comes exclusively with the Chrome browser. And the most important thing is that NPAPI support was completely cut from the Chromium code base for Linux when the project was migrated to a new cross-platform graphics stack Aura. The Yandex.Browser developers had a choice: to leave users without Flash-content or to think of something ...

Fortunately, the option was found quickly enough. Already in this version of Yandex. The browser is able to automatically pick up the package pepperflashplayer-nonfree, available in the standard Ubuntu repository. The user is not even required to run it with special parameters. And if Chrome is installed in the system, then its Pepper Flash will also be used by Yandex Browser.

Currently, deb and rpm packages are available for 64-bit systems, which can be downloaded on browser.yandex.ru/beta . We welcome your feedback and suggestions.
