Bitcasa: pay more, get less or go

Good day,

On September 12, 2011, Bitcasa announced an encrypted "Infinite Drive / Endless Disk" cloud storage for $ 10 a month after the end of beta testing. Last year, on November 19, 2013, Bitcasa announced that the company changes the infinite storage plan from $ 99 / year to $ 999 / year, but allows existing users to stay at a price of $ 99 / year (did not apply to Linux clients in future).

On October 22 of this year, Bitcasa announced that from now on, the endless disk plan is being canceled.

Translation from the Bitcasa FAQ:

In the future, Bitcasa will no longer offer and maintain a subscription to the “endless” plan. Existing Bitcasa users should choose a new plan with an appropriate amount of data for them. To satisfy the desires of users who need more than 5TB of space, we changed the data volume limit for the Pro site from 5TB to 10TB. The price for the PRO plan will be increased from $ 49 to $ 99 / month for new customers. These changes will not affect existing customers.

All customers with an infinite disk plan must make a transition to a new plan before November 15, 2014. Now prices start at $ 10 / month or $ 99 / year for a 1TB cloud space, or $ 99 / month or $ 999 / year for 10TB. Please note that prices are in one category of Google Drive, Dropbox or OneDrive. If you are still not going to move to a new plan, in this case, I quote: (translation from FAQ):

We understand that customers will not want to use our service. As always, your data remains yours and you can download them for free at any time convenient for you [...] If you do nothing, all your data will be deleted and your account will be blocked on November 15, 2014.

In the Bitcasa forum, heated discussions about betrayal by Bitcasa took place, but the company claims that it uses endless storage only for 0.5% of users and because of this they decided to abolish this plan. How true this is is difficult to say. There are also difficulties with the transition to a new site, because Bitcasa created something completely new and all data is transferred automatically (but my transfer stopped at about 30% and does not go any further. Support is silent).

In addition, those who decide not to continue to cooperate with Bitcasa and have large amounts of data in the cloud will face difficulties in downloading all the data on time, because the servers are overloaded and the speed leaves much to be desired. Whether Bitcasa will download all the data after the 15th is unknown. Most likely, many will lose their data.

Company policy, in any case, is doubtful. Whether it is possible to trust them in the future is not clear.

In any case, for the same price you can purchase the same Microsoft OneDrive with Office 365 support.
