Raspberry Pi - what can be done on the basis of “raspberry”?

The mini PC Raspberry Pi could quickly become a popular platform for all sorts of projects - both commercial and not so. There are several reasons for this, among which is the low price of a computer, its relative universality and openness.

As a result, interesting projects began to appear with enviable regularity, and some of these projects are presented in this compilation. Here there are quite serious systems, and projects that can be called entertaining, from the “why not?” Series.

Supercomputer based on Raspberry Pi and Lego

One of the most interesting projects based on the “raspberry” is a supercomputer from 64 Raspberry Pi. As elements for the creation of "server cabinets" served as a regular designer Lego.

As a ROM for this system, SD memory cards with a capacity of 16 GB were used. Such cards were installed in each “raspberry”.

How to make something like that? Detailed instructions from the creator, Professor of the University of Southampton Simon Cox - this link .

Pi-based weather probe

Computer enthusiast Dave Ackerman decided to use his own mini-PC to create a weather probe, with the possibility of obtaining photos from the stratosphere. Detailed report here .

After a few months of work, Dave actually managed to launch his probe, which flew more than 30 kilometers, worked at temperatures of -50 ° C in a very rarefied atmosphere (1% of the standard).

The probe recorded all the necessary parameters, including temperature, humidity, density, height above sea level. Also recorded the coordinates. In addition, the camera was used, with which it was possible to get a lot of great shots.

Internet phone

On the basis of the “raspberry”, a regular landline telephone with a dial pad was improved. Instead of the usual board, the developer installed the Raspberry Pi.

After a series of manipulations, the developer managed to create a Skype phone as a standalone device, without the need to use a connection to a regular computer.

Here is how it looks and works:

Game station

This is a haw- user wwakabobik project . An interesting device that allows you to play a whole range of old games for a large number of consoles, including NES, SNES, Sega Genesis, PlayStation, as well as SCUMMVM, zxspectrum.

The author wrote that "the entire system is based on the RetroArch port, based on the libretro library, which allows the use of emulators of various consoles." As for the graphical shell, EmulationStation , also RetroPie, was used .

Raspberry based tablet

This tablet has an interesting name - PiPad, and wood was used as the material for the case. It looks like this:

The diagonal of the display tablet is 10 inches. Well, and all other characteristics coincide with the characteristics of the “Malinka” itself. True, there is no longer a couple of hours of work, but solid work. Detailed instructions for creating a tablet based on the "raspberry" inside .

The OS used is Raspbian Linux with XBMC.

Wall calendar organizer

User Instructables with the nickname Piney has created a useful gadget for himself - a wall interactive calendar, with the ability to add tasks and events.

The software platform is the usual Google Calendar, all the data from which is transmitted via WiFi to this wall device.

Detailed instructions on how to create something like this - here .

Own radio station

I do not know how legal this is, but the project is really interesting. Those who always wanted to become a DJ on their own radio station, is dedicated.

True, the coverage of such a radio station is relatively small: an area equal to the area of the stadium.

DVD changer

The person who created this thing just got tired of constantly changing DVDs. As a result, this project appeared, which was made simply because it could be done. Why not?

Christmas lighting system

There is not much time left before New Year and Christmas, so if there is an extra “raspberry”, you can create a lighting system for your own house or apartment. How to make such a system is described here . And below is a video showing how this works.

In general, the scope of use of the Raspberry Pi is very wide, much broader than the creation of photo frames and laptops. Developers are trying to improve their device, releasing new, updated versions of the mini-PC and additional modules to it. For example, Raspberry Pi B + was released in the summer, the company recently introduced a display for the “raspberry” . And after some time (unfortunately, it is impossible to say more definitely) the release of Raspberry Pi + is also planned.
