There are already 10,000 servers on Facebook

The infrastructure of the largest social network continues to grow exponentially. The other day, Facebook’s technical director at the MySQL conference announced ( video ) up-to-date data: it turns out that 10,000 servers are already working on the project, including 1,900 MySQL servers, and only two database administrators serve them.

Unlike Google, Yahoo and Microsoft, Facebook does not build its own data centers, but rents other new buildings as needed. More recently, two new data centers have been added to the number of leased ones: in Virginia (October 2007) and California (February 2008).

Now it becomes clear why IBM is positioning the new iDataPlex servers specifically for Web 2.0, because they really do have demand from the same Facebook, Yahoo, Microsoft and Amazon.

The technical director also said that Facebook is still actively using Memcached caching system to optimize the performance of dynamic web applications. Today it is the largest project in the world based on Memcached (805 servers).
