Passion around systemd and using it by default in Debian

The “long-time Unix admins” group has opened the debianfork.org site. They urge the community to consider an alternative to the fork of Debian, because this distribution is going to go to the systemd daemon.

Systemd is the daemon for initializing other daemons in Linux, which is used instead of SystemV Init (sysvinit). Its feature is intensive paralleling of the launch of services during the boot process, which allows to significantly speed up the launch of the operating system. It will probably start using it by default in Debian soon.

This is the next stage of a long-standing discussion around systemd. Some people believe that it violates the Unix philosophy. More than a month ago (the same?), A group of activists launched the BoycottSystemd.org project, calling for a boycott of the systemd and Linux distributions that use this demon.

In order to prevent the fork, activists urge all sympathizers to vote for Ian Jackson's proposal on the freedom to choose an init system in Debian .

For four years since its introduction, systemd has caused mixed feelings among Linux developers and users. On specialized forums this is one of the most discussed topics .

Some people don’t like the fact that systemd included udev code and therefore made it difficult to use this device manager separately from systemd. Another disgusts the desire of the main developer of systemd Lennart Pottering to constantly extend the functionality of systemd. Not everyone shares his radical ideas for upgrading the kernel.

Critics believe that the systemd daemon takes on unreasonably many functions and turns into a major threat to system stability. They call systemd "anti-Unix" and call to boycott the distributions in which it is used. As one of the options, they suggest switching to an OS with “more traditional Unix paradigms”, migrating to BSD, and creating projects that can be an alternative to systemd.
