Sun publishes Java remnants under the GPL

Sun Microsystems is going to license under the GNU GPL license all Java components, without exception, to be considered a fully open platform, and the OpenJDK suite can be freely distributed along with Linux, including OpenSuse, Ubuntu and Fedora distributions.

The “release” process of the Java Platform, Standard Edition (SE) began in November 2006, but has not yet affected some important components, including some cryptographic libraries, graphic libraries and the sound engine, as well as part of the code responsible for managing SNMP . All together, these components make up only 4% of the source code, but it was this little thing that prevented the inclusion of OpenJDK in standard distributions on general terms.

As Sun Microsystems hopes, joining Linux will allow Java to significantly expand its scope of use. Previously, Linux developers were forced to program in alternative languages such as C, C ++ and PHP, now they will have at their disposal a free set of OpenJDK along with compilers.
