The new Wi-Fi 60 GHz technology from Samsung Electronics will increase data transfer speed by 5 times

Good evening, Habr!

Samsung Electronics has announced a successful development of technology that is capable of providing data transfer rates of up to 4.6 Gbit / s or 575 MB / s, which is 5 times higher than the maximum speed of modern consumer devices (866 Mbit / s or 108 MB / s). As a result, the user will be able to download a 1 GB movie in less than 3 seconds, while HD content streaming between smartphones and TVs without compression can even be done in real time without delay.

The technology developed by Samsung complies with the IEEE 802.11ad specification and uses the frequency range of 60 GHz as opposed to 2.4 and 5 GHz in modern Wi-Fi standards. This frequency allows you to get rid of interference in communication channels regardless of how many devices use the same network. Thus, the new Samsung technology bridges the gap between theoretical and actual speeds and demonstrates the real speed, which, in fact, is 10 times faster than 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz wireless data transmission technologies.

Until now, the commercial use of the 60 GHz frequency was impossible, as millimeter waves propagated within the line of sight did not penetrate the walls and quickly lost their power, which led to reception difficulties and data packet loss. Through the use of a millimeter-wave circuit and a high-performance modem, as well as a wide-range beam antenna developed by the company’s engineers, Samsung was able to successfully achieve the highest quality 60 GHz wireless technology that became commercially suitable.

In addition, the company has developed a technology to control the beam. To ensure the highest possible signal level, it changes the parameters of the system controller 3,000 times per second, which allows you to instantly adapt the signal when obstacles or changes occur in the communication environment. Samsung has also developed a new method that allows multiple devices to connect to the network at the same time.

As in the case of the 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz frequencies that are used in modern equipment, the 60 GHz band does not require licensing, and the commercialization of this technology is expected next year. Samsung plans to apply new technology in different product categories, including audio and video equipment, medical equipment and telecommunications devices. Also, this technology will become an integral part of developments dedicated to the implementation of the Samsung Smart Home concept and other initiatives related to the so-called “Internet of Things”.
