Microsoft earned $ 1 billion licensing Samsung Android devices last year

On Habré, they somehow wrote that Microsoft receives substantial profits from licensing fees paid by manufacturers of Android devices. There are several technologies in the platform, patents for which belong to Microsoft, and the company earns from every sale of the device on the Android OS.

But what is the amount of earnings? This information, for obvious reasons, was not disclosed, but recently it became known that last year Microsoft earned a billion dollars in licensing fees from Samsung.

The information became publicly available after the Redmond corporation sued Samsung for failing to pay penalty interest on overdue payments of licensing fees. The fact is that in 2011 between Samsung and Microsoft, two agreements were signed at once, a licensing agreement and a business partnership agreement. The first agreement stipulates the need for deductions for each Samsung released Android device.

The South Korean corporation regularly paid all deductions, but this year it delayed the payment (considering that the purchase by Microsoft of Nokia to be contrary to the agreement), and refused to pay interest on the delay. Interest is not so much, 6.9 million US dollars, but the Redmond giant decided to defend this amount in court.

Probably, Samsung will still have to yield to Microsoft in this dispute, although the decisions of the courts on patent disputes are very unexpected.
