The growth of HSPA users in 2007 was 727%

While the launch of 3G in Russia remains only in the plans, the year 2007 was marked worldwide by an explosive growth in the number of subscribers using HSPA. This technology is an add-on to UMTS, and is based on HSDPA (high-speed downlink) and HSUPA (high-speed uplink) standards. More information about HSPA can be found in the Wiki .

In Russia today there is only one fragment of the 3G UMTS network available to ordinary subscribers. In the fall of 2007, MegaFon launched a network segment in St. Petersburg , and later conducted experiments in Samara. There are also Beeline (near Sokolnikov, Moscow), and MTS, which have closed UMTS test zones for subscribers. But in reality, the first users of 3G will be residents of Siberia and the Far East, it is there that the release of frequencies for the new network is the most intensive.

Meanwhile, the agency Informa Telecoms & Media in its newsletter "3G Wireless Broadband" published the top 10 operators by the number of subscribers using the HSPA service. First place was taken by the American operator AT & T Mobility, increasing the base of HSPA subscribers by 3471% during the year, it attracted 7.5 million subscribers. Americans are followed by South Korean operators KTF and SK Telecom, with annual growth rates of 17677% (3.2 million) and 1685% (2.5 million), respectively. The Australian operator Telstra, thanks to an active policy aimed at accelerating the migration of subscribers from 2G to 3G, increased the number of mobile broadband subscribers by 2,371% to 2.2 million.

The rating includes both giants of the Japanese telecommunications market NTT DoCoMo and SoftBank Mobile, Italian Telecom Italia and Vodafone units in Germany, Romania and the UK.

According to the Global Mobile Suppliers Association, 637 devices with support for HSDPA 211 of which operate at a frequency of 850Mhz are on the world market today.

Russian operators are looking forward to the opportunity to use their 3G licenses. The main reason for the delay is the employment of the necessary frequencies, especially in large cities. That is why MTS said that first of all it will launch 3G in the Moscow metro (there it will be easier with frequencies than on the surface), and MegaFon and Beeline will build networks behind the Urals.
