Red Hat refuses home desktops

Yesterday, Red Hat officially refused to continue developing private desktop Linux distributions. According to the company's management, it is much easier to work in the server market and you can earn real money here, whereas in the home desktop market it is very difficult to compete with Windows. The statement literally says: “The desktop market suffers from the dominance of one dominant developer, and some people still feel that modern Linux desktops simply do not provide a practical alternative.”

In accordance with the new policy changes the overall plan for the development of Red Hat products. In particular, the release of the Red Hat Global Desktop distribution (RHGD), which was planned as a niche product for developing countries (including Russia) and should have appeared in the coming months, is postponed for about a year. At the same time, the development of the innovative Red Hat Online Desktop system seems to be completely stopped.

Having abandoned the low profit direction of home desktops, Red Hat will continue to develop and promote desktop systems for corporate use.

According to experts , the departure of Red Hat from the “popular” market is caused by the change of leadership in the company. The fact is that the new director Jim Whitehurst has set an ambitious task to bring Red Hat's revenues to $ 1 billion a year and now intends to make every effort to achieve the goal, albeit with certain victims.
