Seagate founder Al Shugart dies

On Thursday, 77th year of life, Al Shugart died - the founder of Seagate and one of the people who created the first ever HDD.

Sugart was born in Los Angeles and, like many talented young Californian engineers of his time, began his career at IBM, which was the leader of the IT industry. Soon he began to lead research in the field of storage of information, which in 1961 led to the creation of the first hard disk, known as the IBM 1301.

In 1979, Al founded the company Seagate Technology, which, after going through many moments when it stood on the brink of ruin, has now become one of the leading IT companies in the world, taking a leading position in the hard drives market.

In 1997, Shugart took up politics and, a year later, left Seagate, founding a fund to finance promising young developer projects.

In the memory of his colleagues, he will forever remain as a person with a big heart, never abandoning friends and partners in difficult times and always respectful of his subordinates.
