The University of Tokyo has developed a fast two-legged robot runner with a new balancing system

In the world, several companies are working on the creation of robots with different numbers of limbs, which, as planned, can become reliable human assistants in some areas of activity. Not so long ago, at KAIST University in Korea, create a Raptor tail robot capable of running at speeds in excess of 45 km / h.

Specialists at the University of Tokyo went the other way, creating a small two-legged robot. The speed of the device is 4.2 kilometers per hour, which makes it one of the fastest two-legged robots in the world. When evaluating the speed, it is worth considering the size of the robot: only 14 centimeters in height.

As mentioned above, scientists have applied a new system of maintaining the balance of the robot. If the “ point of zero balance ” method is commonly used, then scientists have created a new system consisting of a high-speed camera and a stabilization motor. As a result, the robot does not stumble, and, according to scientists, can even perform somersaults.

It is worth noting that in order to achieve such high speed with such a small size, the robot must very often go through the "legs": in one second Achires (Actively Coordinated High-speed Image-processing Running Experiment System) takes six steps. Now the duration of the robot's run is only 10 seconds, but scientists are working on increasing this time.

By the way, the same team of robotics, under the leadership of Professor Ishikawa, created another robot, a player in the "rock-paper-scissors". This robot always wins a man, thanks to the presence of the same high-speed camera and a special algorithm for determining the movements of the palm and fingers of a person:
