Russia and Japan will be connected by high-speed optical fiber

By March 2008, an ultra-fast fiber-optic cable system consisting of two routes (900 km each) will run along the bottom of the Sea of Japan between Nakhodka and Naoetsu. According to ITAR-TASS , the electrical engineering corporation NEC will deal with the relevant construction work since the summer of 2007. Financing cabling and so on will be domestic Rostelecom and Japan’s second mobile operator KDDI Corp. The volume of investments is expected to be 5 billion yen (about $ 42.7 million).

The new line with a bandwidth of 640 Gb / s will increase the data transfer capabilities by more than a thousand times. The system will be based on DWDM technology (Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing) 10 Gb / s. The route will become an important part of the Transit Europe-Asia project (TEA, Transit Europe-Asia) connecting the European continent with the Asian continent through the Russian national network. This is the shortest route between the two regions.
