Project Management Information Systems

Employees of organizations in which the project activity is conducted need to manage this activity. As long as individual projects require the participation of individuals and material resources, it is possible to manage this activity separately and chaotically, but this, as a rule, turns out to be a very inefficient exercise. In real life, there are several projects in the company at the same time involving the same employees (shared resources) and a unified system for planning and controlling project activities.

A very important idea that needs to be remembered before we proceed to consider the features of the PMIS: any system is only a tool that will work when the general project management processes are documented and work in the company.

Consider the components of the PMIS (hereinafter the book “Management of high-tech programs and projects” by R.Archibald is cited ):

')

* Subsystem support organizational procedures

* Project control subsystem

* Project Management Information Subsystem

* Technology and Methodology Subsystem

* Subsystem of cultural environment

* Planning subsystem

* Human Resources Subsystem

The PMIS is a single space for storing and processing information, and within the main groups of project management processes, information can be grouped into the following documents:

Model documents in the PMIS

All listed documents can be created, stored and processed without using computers at all. Remember, the "EMIS" is not equal to the "computer project management system." However, computer systems can provide significant assistance in building an EMS, therefore, today, there are a great many.

Software products can be described within categories that we can relate to the areas of project management described in PMBOK. The following map describes the features specific to each software category:

Categories of the PMIS

As a rule, all existing systems fall into several categories.

There are other ways to group such software products. For example, in a Wikipedia article listing existing project management software, the following categories are highlighted:

* project management (planning, monitoring, project reporting)

* distributed project management (software for joint activities, cooperation)

* incident management (service desk)

* project portfolio management

* resource management

Well, that's enough for today. Next time we will talk about the most notable project management products and how the PMIS can be implemented.
