EU has banned some e-commerce tricks

Some time ago, EU human rights defenders succeeded in achieving the adoption of the Consumer Rights Directive consumer protection law, which has recently been extended to the UK. The law takes outside of the legal field some of the dirty methods used in electronic commerce before.

Firstly, it is forbidden to quietly put goods in the shopping cart. When buying a ticket in the basket should not be either insurance or any other goods.

Secondly, it is forbidden to change the value of goods in the basket after purchase, for example, by adding tax, shipping costs or a subscription to the service. All additional options should be clearly shown before purchase, with an indication of their value.

Even if the exact cost of the service is unknown at the preliminary stage, the store must inform the buyer in advance about the presence of an additional markup.

Shops do not have the right to take the "transaction processing cost" more than it actually is. So sales of tickets for 2 euros with a transaction processing cost of 50 euros will remain in the past.

Forced extension of the service at the end of the trial period was banned, if it is carried out imperceptibly and unpredictably for the buyer.

The new law replaced the outdated consumer protection law of 1997, which did not take into account the realities of online commerce.

Unfortunately, the law does not take into account absolutely all the methods that are used by dishonest merchants. Experts also warn that, due to insufficient information from industry representatives about changes in legislation, some users may specifically look for online stores that use forbidden methods, order goods there, and then return money back. Some of these sites are listed on this page .
