Many Twitter users today noticed that there were messages from outsiders on the tweet that they were not subscribed to (not ads, but third-party tweets). This is not a glitch at all, but a new feature of Twitter. In fact, this is a fundamental change in the whole concept of service.
Previously, Twitter played a purely technical "stupid" role - it sent you messages from those users to whom you yourself subscribed. He simply collected them in one tape and updated it in chronological order. Now, Twitter is positioning itself as a “smart” content provider.
The cardinal change of concept was quiet and without loud announcements. Twitter just updated the
“What is Twitter Timeline?” Help section, changing the definition of the tweet tape itself.
In the definition of the Timeline (“All tweets from those you chose to follow on Twitter”) a new paragraph has been added to the information section:
')
“Additionally, when we define a tweet, a tracking account, or other content that is relevant or popular, we can add it to your feed. This means that sometimes you will see tweets from accounts that you do not follow. We select each tweet based on several indicators, including its popularity and how users from your network react to it. Our goal is to make your tape more relevant and interesting. ”
In other words, Twitter knows better what interests you,%% username!
In practice, the work of the “recommendation system” of Twitter often comes down to the fact that it simply relays those tweets that were added to Favorites (Favorites), but not retweeted by other users from your network.
In a sense, Twitter is following the path of Facebook, which also algorithmically filters the user's tape and tries to guess which is more interesting from all the content posted by friends. Only here it is not about filtering, but about adding additional content. This can increase user activity, the number of page impressions on the site means that Twitter’s revenue from advertising.
I wonder what other experiments await us in the future?
