How to protect nuclear power plants from hackers

Nuclear and hydroelectric power stations, oil and gas pipelines, factories, transport networks (subways and high-speed trains), as well as many other vital systems for humanity are controlled using various computer technologies. Vulnerabilities and security errors in such industrial systems can lead to disruption of urban life - for example, a malfunction of urban transport can lead to a massive collapse.

The security issues of critical infrastructures were given considerable attention at the Positive Hack Days IV forum, which took place in May of this year in Moscow. In particular, we had a spectacular competition Critical Infrastructure Attacks: the participants had to take control of the robot-manipulator, crane, transport control systems and urban energy supply (street lighting) presented on a specially created stand.

In the competitive infrastructure, SCADA systems and controllers were used, which are actually used on a multitude of critical facilities in various industries: in factories and hydroelectric power plants, in the management of urban transport, in the oil and gas industry. Participants for several hours found in these systems several previously unknown vulnerabilities - this is really frightening news.

A discussion on the analysis of the security of the automated process control system and the investigation of security incidents at critical facilities will continue as part of our educational program. On Thursday, August 21, at 14 o'clock, on the Positive Technologies website, a free webinar of Ilya Karpov will be held. Ilya will talk about methods of security analysis and approaches to the study of the safety of industrial systems.
