Sproutling: fitness tracker, electronic nanny and child safety system

It is customary to write about such multi-functional gadgets like Sproutling “both the Swiss and the reaper, and the igrets on the dude”. On Habré, a selection of gadgets for children was published yesterday, where Sproutling was briefly mentioned.

In fact, it’s worthwhile to talk more about this device, as Sproutling is a great option for parents with small children. In particular, this device can warn you if the child is not feeling very well, not allowing, therefore, situations when the child will feel bad.

But this device can do much more.

Sproutling Design

The authors of the project are the developers who previously worked at Google and Apple, and physicians, designers and engineers were also involved in the work.

Sproutling system consists of two parts. The first is a bracelet, made of hypoallergenic plastic, which is put on the child’s foot. The developers claim that the bracelet does not cause any negative feelings to the child. The bracelet has several sensors, including a heart rate monitor, an accelerometer, and a temperature sensor.

The second part is the base station, which houses several more sensors and a small camera. The station determines the level of noise, temperature and humidity of the room, the level of illumination of the room. In addition, the same station also serves for wireless charging of the bracelet's battery (for which the bracelet simply needs to be put on the docking station).

Sproutling main features

Actually, many functions have been listed above, here is their summary:

• Monitoring the temperature and heartbeat of the child;
• Definition of sleeping posture - the child is sleeping on the tummy or on the back;
• Determining the mood of the child;
• Determine the level of noise in the room;
• Monitoring the temperature and humidity in the room (if the humidity / temperature deviates from the norm, the system gives a warning);
• Assessment of the level of illumination of the room;
• Maintain video surveillance of the child;
• Send all collected data to your smartphone, with Sproutling pre-installed.

As you can see, the system shows that the child (named Austin) is sleeping, but can wake up due to the noise in the room. In addition, the child has a fever.

Both the sensor and the docking station are equipped with wireless communication modules. The station collects data from the bracelet, and transmits it to the application installed on the user's mobile device. Other users (wife, mother, grandmother, nanny, family doctor, etc.) can also connect to the device owner’s account and receive all the data on their smartphone (for now, only iOS, the Android application is preparing ).

The bracelet's battery lasts about three days of work, the smartphone app tracks battery power, and warns if the bracelet needs to be charged. The docking station itself is connected to the network.

Conclusion . In general, many (if not all) parents with a small child are constantly worried about their child. For some, the thought “is my baby breathing,” constantly revolves, and to calm them down, mom and dad run every 5 minutes to the room with the baby. When they are convinced that yes, it breathes, the temperature of the child, his bed, etc. begins to be checked. For the first month, parents generally resemble people with a certain kind of mental disorder, constantly immersed in the thought of their baby (especially if he is the first). Sproutling, on the other hand, allows, if not completely, then partially alleviate anxiety: you can look at the screen of a smartphone with indicators every 5 seconds, and the baby will not be disturbed, and the parents will be calm.

Price and order

The cost of such a system, of course, can not be low. Now the developers are launching the device into mass production, and the first batch will be shipped in early 2015.

Pre-order can be made for 249 US dollars from the manufacturer , and the retail price will be 249 dollars.

In Russia, you can request a device from the Medgadgets .
