A software artist generated a picture of viruses

Worms like NetSky and Mydoom, trojans and spam have long been a headache for network administrators and security experts, but not for everyone. Programmer Alex Dragulescu from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology found inspiration in them.

Alex made a virus decompilation and wrote a program to generate three-dimensional graphics based on this code. He tried to find interesting, repetitive patterns in the behavior of viruses and in spam. In the picture below, scary red tentacles were generated by the Mydoom worm during its vital activity (port scanning). In general, the artist created dozens of impressive graphic images on the basis of various viruses: “These creatures are very smart. Very intelligently designed. Digital organisms, indeed, are able to adapt to the environment and multiply. We wanted to capture their complexity and uniqueness, ”he says.

Interestingly, the order for the creation of pictures came from the well-known anti-virus company MessageLabs. It seems that the specialists tired of the fight against the contagion decided to see with whom they had fought all these years. They provided Alex with samples of viruses, as well as spam databases and other materials for work.

An exhibition of works by Dragulescu recently opened in one of the art galleries in San Francisco.

Alex is going to generate the next series of pictures on the basis of abstract portraits of bloggers, that is, on the basis of the content of their journals and social connections in local blogger communities.
