NTT DoCoMo offers fragrant ringtones, testing mobile odor transfer service

Will the ringtone, horoscope or song of your favorite artist become better if they are complemented by “pleasant aromas”? The largest Japanese mobile operator NTT DoCoMo announced yesterday a ten-day mobile odor transfer testing service (Kaori Tshshi Mobile), which starts on April 10, i.e. Today. This is a mobile version of the odor transmission service that is widespread in Japan and that is already in use in homes and cinemas.

Users will be able to download the “Fragrance Playlist” (“Playlist of Flavors”), or recipe files of certain smells that are accompanied by visual (GIF-animation) and / or audio (MIDI) content from the mobile i-Mode website. For transferring “aroma data” to a special device (like an air freshener with various basic fragrance cartridges), the service uses the infrared port of the phone. Then this device mixes the main smells to create the selected flavor, which is then sprayed in the air, and on the phone, users play video or audio content associated with that flavor. A subscriber can share smells from his playlist with other users of the service.
