Justin.tv closed

On August 5, 2014, the Justin.tv website (a competitor to YouTube) officially stopped working. This happened a few months after rumors of his purchase by Google for $ 1 billion appeared . The site was closed without warning, which was a surprise for the many webcaster who relied on it.

“You know, if they at least somehow warned, we could move to another service without downtime, but no, not so everything is done in our time, they announced the closure - and closed on the same day. Assholes, ”programmer Jamie [jwz] Zawinski, who broadcast webcasts from his DNA Lounge club at Justin.tv, is not shy about expressions.

Justin.tv was launched in 2007 and was a popular platform for online video broadcasts. Each user could open his “channel” and organize a broadcast. The very first opened his channel on the site of its founder Justin Kan (Justin Kan). He broadcast 24 hours a day and promoted the concept of "lifecasting", that is, round-the-clock broadcast of his life to a wide audience.

In 2011, Justin Kahn opened a parallel project Twitch.tv to broadcast game video and streaming eSports tournaments. In February 2014, the company was renamed Twitch Interactive. By this time, the Twitch service has become very popular: its monthly audience has grown to 45 million people, and the number of broadcast authors is 1 million per month.

The owners of Justin.tv have repeatedly had to deal with problems due to the broadcast of pirated content. Perhaps they decided to concentrate on the game video to avoid legal trouble.

On the other hand, the closure of YouTube’s direct competitor is a logical step for Google if it really bought Twitch Interactive (this information has not yet been officially confirmed).

Some videos from Justin.tv can be restored from an Internet archive (Internet Archive).

Justin.tv users are recommended to switch to another webcasting platform, for example, Streamup .
