The end of the “patent war” between Apple and Samsung

The companies announced an agreement that obliges them to end all patent claims against each other outside the United States. Recall that the battle of the giants have already happened in the courts of Australia, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the Netherlands, South Korea and the UK.

The confrontation between the two giants began in 2011, when Apple filed a lawsuit against Samsung in America for infringing intellectual property rights. The main complaint was to copy the corporate style of the iPhone 3G in a number of Samsung phone models. Samsung did not remain silent, and filed a counterclaim at home, in the Central Court of Seoul. In general, companies blamed each other 30 times in different countries of the world and with varying success. Most often, companies won the "home" courts.

Thus, a court in South Korea decided that Apple had violated two Samsung patents relating to wireless data transmission and ordered Apple to pay compensation of $ 35,400. But at Samsung, he found a violation in the use of scrolling technology owned by Apple. The South Korean judges did not recognize the copy of the iPhone corporate style.

But the US International Trade Commission (ITC), having considered the patent dispute between Apple and Samsung, came to slightly different conclusions. It was recognized that Samsung had violated four Apple patents, including by copying the design of the iPhone and the touch screen technology. The court ordered Samsung to pay compensation of $ 1 billion.

We’re not going to talk about each of the 30 ships, otherwise the note will turn into a multi-volume novel. After two years of hostility and squabbles (financially advantageous to Apple), in August 2014, the management of the companies, weary of the confrontation, agreed to a truce.

However, the monsters, though reconciled, did not make friends: they do not intend to conclude any licensing agreements in the near future. But in any case, this is good news. Let it be better to compete in the market, improving products and reducing its cost, than in exhausting and senseless for consumers courts with each other.
