Epson sublimation printing turns shopping into a print reality show

Globalization and unification is great. Today, each of us has the opportunity to buy a popular smartphone model or a bottle of soda almost anywhere in the world. Life has become easier. Everything has become faster. Everything became more accessible ... But, barely getting used to the convenient unification, we immediately wanted to be different. It's great to have the same jeans as your favorite rock star, or a long-desired book with the same cover as the issues in the home of the French author — but what's the point if every second person has the same?

Therefore, most of us tend to excel. But it is desirable that the possibility of achieving this is also quick, cheap and affordable.

It is the principle “to get something that others do not have, but not to pay for it a lot and not to wait for it for a long time” and underlies the technology of digital printing. Guided by this, the company Epson has released a line of devices for high-quality printing of a variety of printing products in circulation from one copy.

What is a “sublimation print”?

Sublimation printing allows you to transfer images to any polyester fabric and surface, which means - to create individual prints on clothes and accessories, and to do it qualitatively, quickly and affordable to the end customer.

The printing process is as follows: a printer (for example, Epson is Epson SureColor SC-F6000 and Epson SureColor SC-F7000 ) prints a mirrored image on special dye-sublimation paper, from which it is then transferred to fabric or ready-made clothing: paper and The fabric is placed in a thermopress, where, by heating and pressing, the picture takes its firm place on matter. Ink, which is used for such printing, has a special property - when heating up, it goes from a solid to a gaseous state, penetrating deep into the fabric. Such a print is not erased, does not fade and does not look like a sticker.

Using a dye-sublimation printer, you can create a sports uniform for a corporate football team, issue a limited collection of clothes or a series of flags - the cost of one product does not vary with the size of the circulation, and the only condition is only high polyester content.

Print at points of sale

It is not surprising that one of the first Epson SureColor SC-F6000 is located in the center of mass fashion - the well-known clothing network Mass market Topshop installed a printer right in its store in central London. In collaboration with Yr Store, software was developed that allows you to select an image from a data bank, print it on any T-shirt presented in Topshop, pay for the purchase - and in just ten minutes get clothes that nobody else has.

The cost of the finished product is fixed - 22 £ (~ 28 €) for a print in front, 30 £ (~ 38 €) - for an image on both sides (for comparison: Topshop T-shirts with ready-made standard prints are about the same in British stores). The print can be any. And this is not about celebrity photos or folk creative like “I'm with stupid”. On a large touch screen, the buyer chooses from a huge variety of designs and design elements those that he can combine, reduce or place on his T-shirt in his own way. Here it is, the printing technology for the Instagram generation: add a filter, create a “vintage” effect, click “send” - and you're done!

And in the next post we will talk about direct printing on clothing made from natural fabrics.
