New technology adjusts the image on the display for people with visual impairments

Recently, interesting information appeared on the web about the joint development of MIT and the University of Berkeley. The joint development team has created a prototype of the display, which will automatically adjust to the level of human vision.

That is, there is no need for optical glasses - the image on the display will automatically adjust so that the person can see a clear image.

The algorithm "understands" the way in which a certain visual impairment in a person leads to a distortion of the usual "picture" and adjusts the image accordingly. There are small holes in the light filter placed on the display. And the algorithm, changing the luminosity of each pixel, allows you to apply light rays to the retina of the eye so that a clear image is created on the retina of the eye.

The new type of display can adapt not only to the usual cases of myopia and hyperopia, but also to more complex cases, for example, spherical aberration of the eye.

Tests of the prototype were carried out on the Apple iPod Touch, on the display of which was installed a light filter and an acrylic plate. Then the developers used a camera that was set up in a special way, creating an imitation of visual impairment / image distortion.

During the tests, everything turned out, the image on the Apple iPod Touch was able to adjust so that the camera with "visual impairment" normally caught the image on the display.

The developers claim that the practical implementation of the technology will be possible only in a few years. However, a company like Microsoft is already showing interest in the development, so the project definitely has a future.

The advantage of the new technology is that it can even help people with complex types of visual impairment who cannot be corrected with glasses or contact lenses.
