LinkMeUp. Issue number 17. Disadvantages of TCP and new transport protocols

The 17th edition of the Linkmeup podcast is dedicated to the deep tech theme.
Our guest is Dmitry Kachan - a graduate student of SibSUTI. Dmitry is currently engaged in the development of transport protocols running at the application level.
Therefore, today we are talking about the shortcomings of TCP, why now it can no longer fulfill its role as a protocol with guaranteed delivery in some cases.
You will learn what approaches there are to solving this problem.

Under the cat, you can find a list of some commercial solutions and protocols for the efficient transmission of information with guaranteed delivery, as well as Dmitry's research.

Dmitriy's article with application comparison

List of experimental applications:
  1. Tixstream
  2. File Catalyst Direct
  3. Velosity
  4. Catapult
  5. ExpeDat

Some of the solutions are based on TCP, some on UDP. As a result of the article, it is easy to see with the naked eye a significant advantage in UDP-based approaches.

In the analysis, research data was used, where it is shown that in only 75% of intercontinental connections, the packet loss rate is below 1%, respectively, a network study with a packet loss of 1%, at least, takes place. As for the delay - 200 ms Round Trip Time in optical networks corresponds approximately to a distance of 20,000 km. (This is without taking into account the delay in intermediate devices) and therefore such connections are also possible. (all this is described in the article).

Later, studies were conducted on data transfer protocols (before that, it was about final applications).

Dmitriy's article with a comparison of protocols

The following protocols were used:
  1. UDT (opensource)
  2. RBUDP (opensource)
  3. RWTP base of TIXStream
  4. MTP base of ExpeDat

The resulting picture is the same: UDP has a significant predominance.

Project axxelBox

The project was implemented by Anhalt University, the German government (financing) and two German companies: Tixel GmbH and Axxeo GmbH.
Some create firewalls, others RWTP. The idea was to make the use of RWTP for data transfer as transparent as possible.
This project was presented twice at the exhibitions CeBit 2013, and CeBit 2014.
