Design Lynch: Designing Applications for WP with Expert Dave Crawford

It’s not for us to tell you how strong the creation of a high-quality, intuitive and good looking application can make you sweat or even ... bring to tears.

So it was with the three developers - the heroes of our post today. However, luck was on their side - Dave Crawford, a leading application design specialist at Microsoft, came to help them in improving the design and architecture of the user interface this spring.

Our colleagues from the Nokia Developer team recorded all the recommendations of the expert on video and today we invite you to familiarize yourself with these master classes.

Dave Crawford has extensive experience in user interface design and applications. In his portfolio - not only work on branded development for Windows and Windows Phone, but also advising large companies in the field of design. The team led by Dave is constantly working or participating in the development of key applications for the Windows Phone platform. Examples of their creations include official clients for Facebook, Spotify, Beats Music and many others.

As part of this project, Dave worked with developers to optimize ready-made application interfaces in an effort to improve their functionality and user experience. In the video workshops, you can find out what challenges the developers have faced, as well as how much the applications can change in the hands of an experienced expert: from simple interface changes to complete rebranding.

The first candidate for consultation from the guru of WP-design this year was App Park from indie developer Andrew Long. Thanks to the GPS binding, this utility will help users to save the location of the parked car, and then, thanks to simple tips, to find it among many others in the open parking lot. In this master class, Dave Crawford showed Andrew how to make a simple and intuitive interface logic out of a complex and confusing application.

The next developer who needed Dave’s help was Timothy Stewart. His Space Weather application for monitoring solar activity (solar flares, geomagnetic storms, etc.) was very detailed, but required significant ordering of information. The main advice of Dave is to shorten the text and focus on the really important and relevant information.

So far, the last Lynch of Dave this season has been devoted to the WOD Warrior fitness app, which Darin Stromberg has been developing.

Among the main features: daily exercise instructions, keeping a calendar of workouts and progress of physical indicators. Under the leadership of Dave, the developer was able to add to the broad functionality of the application a well-developed visual component (balanced color scheme, simple fonts, and a well-built application pattern).

This is the second season of Dave's master classes, so if the above videos seemed useful and interesting to you, we offer you to read the full list of videos from this link .

Among other things, you can always seek advice from the DVLUP and Nokia Developer communities.

And if you also need a personal consultation of experts in the field of application design, then you can spend the accumulated points in the DVLUP program for an hour-long master class from Toledo Design studio, founded by a former UX design specialist at Microsoft.
